About Egyptian Magic
The quiet icon · Chicago, 1986
“Brother, the spirit has moved me to reveal something to you.”
In 1986, in a Chicago diner, a stranger who called himself Dr. Imas approached a young salesman named Westley Howard with those words. Over the years that followed, he taught him to blend olive oil and the treasures of the hive into a salve he said echoed the balms of ancient Egypt, then disappeared.
Howard took a new name, LordPharaoh ImHotepAmonRa, perfected the recipe, and in 1991 began pouring it by hand into plain white jars with a red and cobalt label. He never advertised. He never made a second product. The jar traveled by word of mouth alone: from health-food shelves to backstage makeup kits to twenty-thousand-review bestseller.
“Dreams don't have deadlines. There is a dream out there with your name on it, go claim it.”The founder's motto
- 1986A stranger, a diner, a secret recipe
- 1991The first hand-poured jars are sold
- 2001Allure finds it in celebrity makeup kits
- 2007The New York Times profiles the “self-made Pharaoh”
- TodayLoved in 45 countries, still one jar
Word of mouth only
Never advertised.
Always shared.
A reputation built slowly and quietly over 30 years, passed along like a good secret by makeup artists, dermatologists, and a few famous faces along the way.
Won't leave home without it.
My all-around go-to. I use it on the kids, too.
On my hair, my skin, everything.
A serious miracle worker.
As independently reported, not paid endorsements. That's rather the point.
